Choosing bed frames
The right bed frame is important in your home. It will be going in the room you want to ultimately be about comfort, relaxation and a reflection of your own personality. It may not seem like that major an issue, after all you just want one that looks nice right, but there are important factors to consider when even thinking about getting a new bed frame and they can have a lot to do with your future happiness with it, and it’s longevity.
You need to first think about the size. You probably know the size mattress that you will want in order to suit your needs. Generally a person with a room of their own will want a single or queen size bed; a couple a queen, double or king, and a large family may even opt for a super king, which will allow everyone to sit in together in the mornings or at night. It is important to remember that the mattress needs the bed frame for support, so check when buying a mattress that it is fine on the type of bed frame that you want. Some mattresses can sag if on the wrong support system, so it is always worth asking before you buy.
Once you know the kind of bed frame you need (slatted, a divan bed etc) then you can think about the style features more. If you want a real room of luxury, do you want a four poster bed; a carved sleigh bed or something else that costs that little bit extra and will make the bed the focal point of the room? If you are someone who likes traditional styles with a header and footer, then you need to make that decision before continuing. Standard frames cannot have a footer fitted at a later date, as certain fittings are needed on it. It would also look bad to remove the footer, so if you want to change the headboard, you would need to be able to get a new footboard too to match. Often it is easier to just go for a bed with a headboard, but a footboard always looks nice and is something to think about when you are looking around to buy.
Realise that the size of the bed is really the mattress size. It is that which is a ‘double’ or ‘king’. The bed frame will add extra inches onto the outside of this, so always measure the frame before you decide to buy, and go home and check it would not take up too much space. Some frames can be surprisingly bulky, so you need to check you are happy with the amount of floor space it would leave you first.
Deciding the overall tone or mood of the room is the last step for selection. Do you want classic wood; modern metal or more natural fabrics and leather? Think about whether you would get bored if you opted for an ‘in style’ or ‘modern’ bed. Bed frames should last many years, so pick something you will find timeless and can fit in with you wherever you may move and however you may decorate in the future.
