Building Strong Public Schools |

CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY |
|
Yes We Can! Baton Rouge (YWC! BR)—is a grassroots movement dedicated to raising the level of opportunity, resources and support that is being given to students by rejuvenating the community’s excitement and concern over the public school system in East Baton Rouge Parish.
Baton Rouge citizens are responsible for their public schools. Informed, knowledgeable

Who is Yes We Can! Baton Rouge? |
|
One Common Goal—Modeled after Yes We Can! in Mobile, Alabama, our campaign has one major goal—building community responsibility for improving public education outcomes in Baton Rouge.
100 Black Men, Academic Distinction Fund (ADF), EBR Black Elected Officials, the Baton Rouge Christian Ministerial Alliance, NAACP and the Working Interfaith Network (WIN) have joined together to carry out the YWC! BR movement.
What is the work?—YWC! BR will sponsor more than 150 community meetings. Each community meeting will consist of up to 25 citizens led by two trained facilitators that meet in a convenient location to discuss goals and a vision for the future of Baton Rouge and our public schools. |
|
and active citizen engagement is essential to creating and sustaining conditions that can lead to high performing schools and successful student outcomes.
We believe the school system will respond to the concerns and needs voiced by the community if we join together. |
|
What is the outcome?—Information from these conversations will be captured in a YWC! BR community agreement—the Baton Rouge Covenant, which will identify the key areas in which our local citizens say they most want to see our public schools improve.
This document will then be placed in front of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to be adopted as policy in May 2008.
Finally, YWC! BR and ADF will monitor the results and report back to the community on a yearly basis as to the status of the agreement and the school board’s five-year strategic plan. |
