It needs to be big enough for a high school freshman (so pretty big)

Automatic $13.96 The Jesus and Mary Chain’s third studio album was a mixed bag, a touch rougher and more aggressive-sounding than Darklands, but still not the equivalent of Psychocandy for sheer kicks. Part of the problem was the actual studio setup; while soon-to-be superstar producer/engineer Alan Moulder did a great job on the sound, finding a way to mix thick guitar rumbles without sounding uncommercial, the fact was that the band was really just the brothers at this point. Like on Darklands, all drumming was courtesy of machines, and here the approach often felt monotonous; Bobby Gillespie’s approach, for better or worse, really was distinct and individual, fitting with the style of the band beautifully. Meanwhile, much of the bass was also created via keyboards, another unusual switch. When Automatic was on, though, it was on, especially courtesy of another blazingly brilliant single. If “Sidewalking” was a T. Rex homage, “Head On” paid tribute to rock’s eternal image of supercharged cool; one can almost smell the black leather as Jim Reid delivers the ultimate “Break on Through” lyric: “Makes you wanna feel/Makes you wanna try/Makes you wanna blow the stars from the sky.” The music sure didn’t hurt either; even the synth bass sounded perfectly right. Other songs, like the brawling “Blues From a Gun” and the aggro-sneer of “Her Way of Praying,” suggest a new energy on the part of all involved, though likely enough they came across better live in the end with the Reids’ then-touring band of the time. Meanwhile, there are definitely some sharp individual moments: the sudden massive feedback clang during the instrumental break on “Coast to Coast,” the “Sweet Jane”-inspired melody on the nicely moving “Halfway to Crazy,” and the hint of strings on the brief “Drop.” ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

Jackson Browne $9.99 One of the reasons that Jackson Browne’s first album is among the most auspicious debuts in pop music history is that it doesn’t sound like a debut. Although only 23, Browne had kicked around the music business for several years, writing and performing as a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and as Nico’s backup guitarist, among other gigs, while many artists recorded his material. So, if this doesn’t sound like someone’s first batch of songs, it’s not. Browne had developed an unusual use of language, studiedly casual yet full of striking imagery, and a post-apocalyptic viewpoint to go with it. He sang with a calm certainty over spare, discretely placed backup — piano, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, congas, violin, harmony vocals — that highlighted the songs and always seemed about to disappear. In song after song, Browne described the world as a desert in need of moisture, and this wet/dry dichotomy carried over into much of the imagery. In “Doctor My Eyes,” the album’s most propulsive song and a Top Ten hit, he sang, “Doctor, my eyes/Cannot see the sky/Is this the prize/For having learned how not to cry?” If Browne’s outlook was cautious, its expression was original. His conditional optimism seemed to reflect hard experience, and in the early ’70s, the aftermath of the ’60s, a lot of his listeners shared that perspective. Like any great artist, Browne articulated the tenor of his times. But the album has long since come to seem a timeless collection of reflective ballads touching on still-difficult subjects — suicide (explicitly), depression and drug use (probably), spiritual uncertainty and desperate hope — all in calm, reasoned tones, and all with an amazingly eloquent sense of language. An Overview of 2008 Saturn Sky Red Line

The 2008 Saturn Sky Red Line is a great looking cruiser, almost feline in its stance, sporty and cool. Model year 2007 saw GM bring out a refreshing lineup of wheels, which included the Red Line performance models.

The 2008 Saturn Sky Red Line displays several exclusive interior and exterior features compared to the Sky roadster. Noteworthy among them are 18-inch polished aluminum alloy wheels, dual polished aluminum exhaust outlets, front lower fascia with design elements, cooling vents and a large mesh grille. Headlamp treatment replaces the Sky’s brilliant finish with black bezels.

The 2008 Saturn Sky Redline features a compact cockpit, leather shift knob, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, stainless steel pedal covers, metallic sill plates, unique Red Line gauges and a digital boost gauge included in the Driver Information Center. As with any two-seat sports convertible, luggage space is rather a compromise, but it can still hold plenty for short trips.

The Red Line handles well, has a performance-tuned suspension and feels rock solid with exemplary road-hugging qualities because it is low slung. Vibration and wind noise, normally expected in a convertible, is minimal. The car features an Ecotec turbocharged 2.0L engine, (GM’s first direct-injection offering) that produces 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque, making it GM’s most powerful Ecotec production engine.

Fuel economy rates at 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Lower fuel consumption is achieved by gasoline direct-injection technology, whereby fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to ensure complete burning of the air/fuel mixture, thus helping the engine to produce more power. With direct injection, less fuel is required to achieve the desired horsepower compared to a conventional combustion system.

When it comes to an open, wind-in-your-hair convertible, safety is a key element. The Saturn Sky Redline is equipped with dual stage driver and passenger front air bags, daytime running lights, StabiliTrac electronic stability control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and OnStar telematic services.
